Kindness Doesn't Cost Much Time Or Money

Sometimes people feel there’s not much they can do for others when they’re struggling in their own life. This is especially true when money is tight. The truth is that you can sometimes feel even better about your situation when you take some time to focus your energy elsewhere. Giving allows you to feel gratitude for the things you do have. Kindness doesn’t have to cost a thing, and there are plenty of ways you can express it that require little time investment. Here’s a list to give you some ideas.

  • Compliment at least one person today on something besides their appearance.
  • Write a LinkedIn recommendation for a colleague who does a great job.
  • Leave coupons you won’t use on the shelf next to their product.
  • Take a donation of clothing to your local thrift store.
  • Smile and say hello to the people in your office building.
  • Offer to run an errand for a loved one you know has been extra busy lately.
  • Leave positive notes on park benches, in dressing rooms, or other random places for people to find.
  • Write a short note of thanks to someone who has made a difference in your life.
  • Don’t check your email or social media when out with a friend.
  • Check in on your elderly neighbor who doesn’t get many visitors.
  • Introduce yourself and say hello to the wallflower or new person at a party.
  • Sneak a note of support or praise into your child’s lunch box.
  • Offer to babysit or cook a meal for a new mom in your social circle or neighborhood.
  • Let someone merge in traffic.
  • Give up your seat on public transit or while waiting in a restaurant lobby for your table.
  • Forgive a debt that someone owes you - whether it’s money or something else.
  • Bring a treat into the office during an especially busy or stressful time at work.
  • Encourage someone with praise and words of support if you know they’re struggling.
  • Praise your child for good behavior; this recognition means a lot.
  • Stand up for someone who is being treated unfairly.
  • Make amends with someone who has treated you badly in the past or someone you may have hurt.
  • Leave a positive comment on a blog or social media page.
  • Offer to listen to someone who seems down or see if they’d like a hug.
  • Volunteer to help clean up before leaving a party or gathering.

These are just a handful of ways you can easily be kind to someone else today. You can give some of them a try or you might want to see if you can create your own list. Once you get started, you’ll see that acts of kindness don’t require much time or money to be meaningful.
