The Importance Of Kindness In Our Social Environment

As social creatures, it’s in our nature to want to connect and help each other. These days, much of our socializing is done online. This creates new social dynamics. It’s far easier for people to be unkind and to react aggressively when they’re sitting behind a keyboard, rather than face to face with someone. That’s why it can take extra effort and understanding to extend warmth and generosity to people in cyberspace. Here are some ways you can be sure to extend graciousness in your virtual interactions.

Speak Up

One of the best and most impactful ways you can be kind in an online social environment is to speak up when you see others being cruel or rude toward someone else. Standing with someone who is being unfairly targeted is a supportive gesture that is usually received with great appreciation. You don’t have to be aggressive in your response. Simply pointing out that you disagree and find someone’s actions inappropriate is just fine. It can mean a lot.

Share Compliments Freely

Another great step to take in spreading online kindness is to compliment people whenever possible. Let folks know when their posts have inspired you. Praise a friend’s thought-provoking or emotional essay. Share people’s art with your network and be sure to let the artist know how they made you feel.

Apologize When You’re Wrong

Even when we have the best of intentions, it’s easy for things to get heated. Sometimes we say things we regret, or we act without thinking. This can be especially easy to do with the anonymity of a digital environment. If it happens, take the initiative to apologize. People will see that and respect you for it. You’ll set the tone for future interactions and show others it’s okay to admit when you’ve made a mistake.

Acknowledge Others

Your social media feed can get pretty full sometimes. It can be difficult to respond to every post or comment. This is understandable. However, it’s important to try to at least acknowledge engagement in your online accounts with a simple, “thank you” or even an, “I’ll look into that,” if you need more time on the matter. This lets people know they are heard. They took the time to engage with you. They expect, appreciate, and deserve an acknowledgement whenever possible. That’s not to say you owe a response to someone who has been rude to you or is being disruptive. Sometimes it is best to simply ignore these types of comments.

These are just some ways you can extend kindness in your online social interactions. Once you get in the habit of being aware, it’s easier to be more mindful. Even in the digital world, it’s possible to spread kindness and love.
